Disable sleep mode and hibernate in Windows 7/8/10

We run a few virtual Desktop VM’s and every once in a while a user either puts the machine to sleep or we find the machine in hibernation mode. Here a few registry keys how to disable sleep and hibernate function.

The following key will disable sleep mode on any Desktop OS (Windows 7 / 8 /10). You can push this out through group policy or SCCM. The Power reg key does not exist by default and will need to be created.

In Windows 7 the Sleep button will become grayed out and the sleep options will no longer show up in Control Panel Power options. In Windows 8 & 10 the sleep button will not be visible, you will only see Shutdown & Restart.

Disable Sleep Mode

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\abfc2519-3608-4c2a-94ea-171b0ed546ab /v ACSettingIndex /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Enable Sleep Mode

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Power\PowerSettings\abfc2519-3608-4c2a-94ea-171b0ed546ab /v ACSettingIndex /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Disable Hibernate Mode

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v HibernateEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Enable Hibernate Mode

reg add HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v HibernateEnabled /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
